School Groups

Gunn’s Bush Camp is a perfect spot to activate, learn and motivate.

Bunk Room Layout

The bunk rooms are in two wings off the hall with a bathroom either side.

The right/west wing is the ‘girls’ wing with 8 bunkrooms with an internal hallway.  There are 74 beds in this wing comprising of 6 bunk rooms with 8 beds and 2 bunkrooms with 13 beds.

The ‘boys’ wing is to the left/east of the hall and comprises of 4 bunk rooms – 3 with 8 beds and 1 has 6 beds (30 beds).

 

Fire Alarms

There is a smoke alarm in each bunk room. There is a hard-wired monitored alarm system throughout the complex.

There are three fire extinguishers on site:

one by the hall stage, one at the hall entrance (creek side) and one in the kitchen.

There is also a fire blanket in the kitchen.

The emergency assembly point is in the trees outside the hall (creek side) where there is an assembly point sign.

 

Health & Safety

There is a notice board in the hall with health & safety messages, including outlining the natural hazards around the camp. A hazard register is available if you would like one sent to you.

 

Some Activity Options

DOC Gunns Bush walking track just up the road from the camp (walking distance) which takes approximately 1.5 hours that you could make an afternoon activity out of.

Camp walking track within our native bush which would be perfect for a short 'solo' experience (it's very easy to find your way back), and morning runs!

There is also a fire pit available for marshmallows and/or damper.

We have an abundance of lawn for ball games etc.

Cricket set, tug of war rope and outdoor Jenga on sit.

The water slide has been a highlight for school groups.

Adventure Masters is the Dunedin based company that have held day activities here before.  If you wish to contact Evan Jamieson at amnz1@xtra.co.nz or 027 450 7952, he would be able to provide further information about the activities they can bring to you.

South Canterbury Museum can facilitate a creek study or they offer a pioneering experience also.

Te Ana Rock Art Centre will visit if asked.

The Waimate Event Centre offers a rock climbing wall and inline skating sessions.  Please contact waimateeventcentre@waimatedc.govt.nz or 03 689 7771 for hire details.

The Norman Kirk Memorial Swimming Centre is a 34 metre outdoor pool open in Waimate during the summer months.

YMCA South Canterbury offer activities such as bubble football and archery.  They can be contacted at info@ymcasc.org.nz or 03 688 3682 for further information.

WAVE (Wellbeing and Vitality in Education) South Canterbury can offer such things as team building exercises, games and sports equipment. .https://www.wavesouthcanterbury.co.nz/

If schools would like students to plant a tree, we have seedlings on site and would be happy to facilitate this.
